Your Holiday Guide to Shopping Local in Glendale CA

We are nearing the mid point of December- the shoppingness month of the year!  Are you completely done or in a complete state of panic?  Oh, the state of denial?  I know that one, too.
Save yourself time and hassle by shopping local.  You avoid the crowds, the parking lots and the seething morass of humanity.  Instead, you talk to friendly shop owners who know their stuff, help you make the perfect selection and are grateful to see you.
Here is a list of my personal favorites.  Where do you like to shop?

ONCE UPON A TIME
2207 HONOLULU AVE
818-248-9668
Montrose, California 91020
http://www.onceupona.com

Everyone loves a great book!  This is my favorite local retail book shop.  It’s main purpose it to inspire a passion for reading in young people, but there is plenty for all to love.  I wrote an extensive review HERE.
PAPER RABBIT
2269 Honolulu Avenue
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-957-2848
http://www.thepaperrabbit.com
If cute had a primary home in Glendale, this would be it.  Scrapbookers, card makers, sticker and doodad lovers of every sort will swoon with the dizzying array of cute-ness.  The artists at Paper Rabbit also custom decorate and embellish containers, lunch boxes, clipboards and more.  If you have a little person who adores cute on your list, this is a MUST do retailer.
CRITTERS
2277 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-249-3777
My kids adore this place.  Filled to the brim with whopee cushions, unicorns and rainbow bead curtains, this is the ultimate pre-teen “stuff” shop.  I think it is the perfect place to get stocking stuffers and Santa gifts.  Maybe, just maybe, a joke gift for the office gift exchange.
JANE’S CAKES & CHOCOLATES
2331 HONOLULU AVE #D
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-957-2511
http://www.janescakesandchocolates.com
Are you a Martha Stewart-esque crafty person?  One of the very best candy and baked goods supply shops is  in our very own Montrose Shopping Village.  Making a unique edible gift is easier than you think with a resource like this in your own backyard.  Here is my review.
BELLA
2225 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-957-6057
I love this little boutique.  It is just the right mount of hip + girly and I always feel like their selection is unique.  In addition to the chic clothes, Bella carries bags, small accessories and gifts.  Do you have a girlfriend that needs a little something special?  This is the place to shop.
PATTYE’S CLOSET
2422 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-957-5713
http://www.pattyescloset.com (this is an unusually cool website.  you should check it out)
Is your giftee a Mad Woman (is she Mad for Don Draper?)  Pattye’s Closet is a must see store.  It is overflowing with curious finds, elegant gowns and chic, so very now, vintage clothing and accessories.  Rene is the owner and creative inspiration- tell her what your giftee likes and she will dive right in and find it.  Whatever she finds will be utterly cool, absolutely unique and a bargain to boot.  Read my review HERE.

NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK
2262 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-248-7686

Most of you know that I am an obsessive knitter.  My local supplier is Jodi at Needle in a Haystack.  I am a bit of a yarn snob (why go through all that trouble with anything less than lovely yarn?) and Needle in a Haystack has some of the best yarn, anywhere.  There is also a large supply of embroidery and needle pointing stuff.

GLENDALE COIN GALLERY
(818) 243-2900
228 S Brand Blvd, Glendale, CA 91204
Moving along, southward, we come to one of my quirkier choices.  True confession- I’ve been the owner’s Realtor for many years, now, and it was only recently that I came to understand what a gem this local business truly is.  The owner knows more about coins and stamps than most experts- he writes and curates whole catalogs for major auctions.   However, the shop is also filled with collectibles, estate jewelry and local vintage art.  If your giftee values history or art, you can’t miss this local treasure.

CAT IN THE LOTUS
123 Maryland Ave., Glendale, California
(818) 244-0977
http://www.steamboats.com/catinthelotus.html
Another downtown treasure is the Cat and the Lotus.  Perfect for the flowy, easy going earth momma on your list, Cat in the Lotus has clothing, gifts and art from all sorts of exotic spots on the globe.  Bali, Thailand, India, China and Mexico are all likely sources for scarves, hand carved toys, accessories and home decor.

BLACK COW CAFE
2219 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-957-5282
http://whatscookninc.com/black_cow1.htm

All of this shopping is bound to make you hungry, right?  One of go to places is Black Cow in Montrose.  It is consistent, friendly and the specials are often completely outstanding.  My review HERE.

SUSHI MANSTAR
2426 HONOLULU AVE
Montrose, California 91020
Phone: 818-249-2501
If there was a favorite restaurant in the Young Family, this would be it.  We love the staff, the food and the prices.  My review HERE.

BEROLINA’S
3421 Ocean View blvd
Phone 818 2496506
http://www.berolinabakery.com/

My guilty pleasure on the north side of town.  I am mad for their Prune Danish (don’t laugh until you’ve had one.  OMG is all I can say about that)  and their bread is simply divine.  My review HERE.

Portos
315 North Brand Boulevard, Glendale, CA‎ –
(818) 956-5996‎
http://www.portosbakery.com/

I doubt I need to tell any of y’all about this local treasure.  When my Sister and Mother in law came to town last month they ate breakfast lunch and dinner at Portos.  “Dinner?!” you say?  yes.  Read my review HERE.  By the way, Portos is the ideal place to get office potluck goodies, hostess gifts or to round out your own party menu.

YOGA AT THE VILLAGE
1306 Sonora
http://www.yogaatthevillage.com/

Last and best is Yoga at the Village.  The holidays are stressful and the best gift you can give is to yourself.  Take a class, or indulge in a series of classes.  Just when you think you couldn’t possible is when you absolutely must.  Read my review HERE.
